I’ve added a gigantic gallery of golly GIF’s. Plenty of entertaining shit to look at while we wait for matchmaking to pick up a game, or for Cook to suck up to Marcci long enough to play another game before being forced to go to sleep at 7 p.m. on a Friday. Just sayin.

Yea. I did that.

So my ign is Pizard and I’ve been playing “support” roles in video games for a good 10 years now. It’s always my go to role regardless of it’s impact on the game. A few things I’ve picked up along the way would be: * Wolfenstein enemy territory – medic * TF – medic * City of Heroes – Empath * Worlf of Warcraft – resto shaman * LoL – Support

The list goes on, just trying to explain things from someone who has been doing this role longer than you. Why do I do it? Have you ever been playing karthus and you lose a teamfight with half the team at 200hp and you hit your ult with that giant smile on your face just waiting for your moment of glory, then your jaw hits the floor as you hear soraka’s ult go off and the moment you were sure was coming was stolen by that damn support? To me, that’s better than getting the kill, because I got your glory, and called you a bitch at the same time.

People always told me I was a good support in LoL but I never really understood the compliment until recently, I got tired of playing support in solo que all the time (I’m at around 1600 right now top is 1683) and having these amazing games where I do nothing wrong and play the role so well but I still lose horribly. You just can’t carry a team from support. Think of support as a percentage multiplier; if your team is great, you turn them into gods; however, if your team has scrubs your skills will do nothing for them.

It has really gotten to me lately, so much that I’ve finally started to branch out in solo que instead of just normals, so I’ve been playing AD bot a lot since it’s the lane I am so familiar with. Now here is where it starts to get painful. When I have to sit there and watch other supports not know what the hell they are doing at all. I am truly amazed by the fact that a bad support will just break my lane completely and I feel useless. I’ve never really had to deal with it before but now all the time people tell me I was doing a good job supporting is finally starting to sink in.

I just want to run over a few arguments to help people understand the roll people, because people seem to think that support is easy, but it has much more depth than the average player sees from I have learned… First I’ll go over the idea of knowing what supports work well with which ADs and why.

If you ever want to do a double kill lane, or some kind of non-sustain support (other than Janna) 99% of the time you are going to want a cait, she is the safest AD and needs the least support in the sense of helping her avoid the enemy.

• Ashe – She requires a lot of protection to be useful, has no escape, no steroid. I feel that in solo que she is very lack luster because of this. I like her more in 5s because of her strong ability to initiate. I would pick Janna or Soraka. Ashe generally doesn’t go for kills early, she is a late game monster, Janna works well with late game because she offers the most protection, she has 3 peel abilities which is why she is my favorite. Soraka works well with her to keep her in lane to farm and be strong for lane game, Volley spam as well, an ashe with mana is a scary ashe. Not to say that the other traditional supports are with her (ali sona taric) I just feel the other two work better with her situation.
• Cait – might as well hit random on the support role. Not only can you pick any support with cait and be just as effective, you can pick something to throw the enemy off, like Leona or Blitz for a very strong kill lane. Alistar is good with her because cait has no steroid. Alistar keeps the enemy in range of cait for a long time so she can dish her damage out, the synergy with her traps is very deadly. Janna works well with her to easily knock people out of lane. Janna can throw a tornado to get in close for a slow then shield cait to get a lot of harass off to give them the advantage fast. If you go with soraka, buy lots of wards. Make sure you’re protected, and put cait on auto push.. You all know how annoying it is, and it works as long as you can see the enemy coming. Sona is strong just like cait early so she is going to help zone/harass early. I love taric with cait because it’s so easy for her to follow up on stun harass while staying safe.
• Ezreal – any support that is strong early works well with ezreal. He has AD and AP ratios which is why sona is a great kill lane choice. Taric is probably my favorite because ezreal can quickly get in position to follow up on a stun and drop a ridiculous amount of damage in a short time after shatter goes off, same thing with alistar. I don’t like Janna with him very much because it takes Janna a few levels to really get going whereas ezreal has it from the get-go and the longer the game goes on the weaker ezreal becomes. Soraka is a good choice because ezreal is going to harass your ass every chance he gets, even if he misses the AD will have to be so aware of it that it will often cause them to miss cs.
• Graves – Soraka. Every. Time. Graves is a caster AD, his damage is directly linked to his mana bar, this is why Sivir has such a high win-rate against graves (TIL). any other support in going to be on par with second aside from counter picks which I’ll mention when I go over the supports.
• Kog – I almost always pick Janna with kogmaw because everyone and their mom wants him dead once it gets to late game, As I said before, Janna has 3 different peel abilities and since kog stacks so much AS the AD steroid you give him works well. If you play ali just remember that late game you need to save your abilities for peel, not aggressively away from your koggie. Sona works well in lane because kog has AP and AD ratios so the buff is nice, but late game when kogs threat goes through the roof she has little peel so I try to avoid her unless my comp has other peel abilities for kog. Soraka works well in lane because once kog gets 6 he has a lot of harass potential from the mana feed, but soraka’s 0 peel in teamfights makes me avoid picking her. Taric? don’t, just. don’t. taric is strong early and weak late, the exact opposite of kog.
• Miss Fortune – Exactly the same as graves. It’s sad how they literally took MF’s kit and just buffed every ability and said “hey we made a new AD, his name is better than mF, I MEAN GRAVES”
• Sivir – Sivir counters abilities. This makes her great in lane against cait/graves/trist. but she is a mana whore with that Q of hers, I normally like to pick soraka with her so she can always have the pressure of harass. if you want more kill potential Taric and Sona and Ali all offer the same potenial. I haven’t played Janna with her much since the rework so I can’t comment on how strong that is, if someone has let me know!
• Tristana – Sona is always my first choice, 3 of trist’s abilities have AP ratios and she has an AS steroid, this makes her an absolute monster with sona’s auras. Janna being my second because of how strong trist is late game due to her extreme range. Taric good for the same reason as sona at level 6, trist does very well with a taric ult and the two of you can one combo an enemy in lane very early. Alistar does well with trist becuase of how she pushes the lane, I will explain that when I go over alistar below. I would never pick soraka with trist becuase I feel she doesn’t offer any kill potential for trist and has no peel for late game, not that she is bad.. the others are just better.
• Vayne – This should be obvious. Alistar or Taric always first, the strength of vayne following up on taric/ali harass is almost always a kill, the double stun into a wall is just too much for any AD to take. Sona does well because of the kill potential as well but it doesn’t compare to the taric ali, I tend to avoid Janna and soraka with vayne for the same reason. Vayne is just too squishy, it’s too easy to kill vayne inbetween soraka heals and if Janna isn’t in the perfect position at all times she often can’t save her squishy ass in time.
• Corki – My first choice is always soraka, much like graves corki relies on his abilities for a large amount of his damage, if corki has mana he’s going to hurt, and going to contunue to hurt until it’s gone. Sona being second best because corki is another ad with both ad and ap ratios. I

haven’t played taric/ali enough with corki enough to say the strengths of it but I would imagine the -armor from taric with corki’s -armor would be very strong early. and Janna works well with corki because corki doesn’t need much protecting since his W has such damage. It leaves Janna to help support other carries.

Now, as a support knowing what range your AD needs to be in to follow up on your actions is important. I would say this is the most important with Taric and Alistar, don’t waste your mana if your AD can’t follow up on it. the only support that should ever harass alone is sona. Your AD should generally be standing at max range if they are CSing, and right by their own creeps to deny the enemy.

• Ashe – 600
• Cait – 650
• Corki – 550
• Ezreal – 550
• Graves – 525
• Kog – 500 (+210 at level 9)
• Miss Fortune – 550
• Sivir – 500
• Trist – 550 (+153 at level 18)
• Vayne – 550

Now for the support breakdown, to better understand what supports do better against the other lanes.

Alistar – He has such a strong kit that it has fallen victim to nerfs many times. I rarely play Alistar anymore because he is different from most supports. He requires a melee range position so it’s a whole different ballgame. This was fine when he had the full glory of his ult, but after his last ult nerf I find myself getting blown up like I don’t even have an ult, it has discouraged me from picking him many times. Season 1 I had a 57% win-rate with him but season 2 I am only 40% with him becuase of his nerfs(the flash nerf hurt him a lot too). Now, Alistar does well with lanes that push, why? Because most of the time alistar is useless in the middle of the lane unless you “wombo combo” which is pulling off your WQ abilities at the same time, which is great for harass… but doesn’t often secure a kill. Alistar’s happyzone is either pushed onto your turret or pushed onto theirs, for example if you are working with a trist, and you are pushing the lane, you want to be at the end of the bush cloest to their turret and when they come in to CS you want to step out and W them against the wall briefly stunning them giving yoru AD time to follow up, after that brief stun is done with you want to Q them into the air, try to space out your abilities as much as possible while keeping them in the same spot to get maximum damage from your passive. Also, I try to start the game with a pink ward because warding a bush against alistar destroys most of his pressure. having a pink to contorl the bush is how you will win your lane. Keep in mind your W has a range of 650, so you can hit any carry that is going in for a cs by comboing them. Don’t do it too often as it will burn through your mana fast. I tend to avoid picking Alistar against a kog’maw or vayne because of how easily they can go through your ult. Be careful against sivir as well, her shielding one of those abilities gives her a huge advantage.

Janna – by far my favorite. I believe Janna to be the strongest support but the people at my elo just don’t understand how to utilize her in lane. Many times when I have picked Janna in draft people will ask me to change to something with sustain because they don’t feel Janna is going to help them win. Janna relies on mitigation, knowing when an AD is going to go in for harass is the most important thing to know when laning with Janna, shielding as much damage as you can. You don’t trade when you have a janna, think of it as having a blitz, you sit there and wait for an oportunity then you go all in to either get a kill or knock them out of lane. Most of the time if you want to sit there and have a harass war with an AD, whoever has the Janna will fall behind due to the lack of heals. Always try and kite the enemy with Janna, she is very fast for a reason. moving to get into a position to throw a tornado that will line up with both enemies in the lane is something that is very important to her strength. I tend to pick her a lot to counter aoe teams (kennen fiddle morg) and when I have a late game AD carry. Her passive is also to be taken into account, If I have other people on my team that rely on mobility such as garen/udyr/gp/nid ect ect. Janna is a great pick, that 3% passive helps throughout the whole game.

Soraka – I’m not sure I should even explain anything about her, I never played her in season 1 because of how boring and easy she is. If someone has a channeled ability save your silence. If someone has ignite on them and the person attacking them is already peeled WAIT to heal them until ignite is gone (sad how often I see that.) Heal your carry that is being his by their AD, not by the caster derp. no sense in wasting half of the strength of your heal. Stay behind everyone, since you have no escape and no peel as long as you are in the correct position no one will go for you unless they are dumb (sad how often I see this as well). Just know that ADs know to go on offense when your armor buff wears off so whenever it’s on cooldown be on alert. Almost forgot. 90% of the time the enemy picks Alistar support I pick soraka to counter it, as I said above Alistar’s W range is 650. Soraka’s E range is 725 so if he is going in to do some punishing Soraka can stop it long enough for your carry to reposition himself. Not many people realize how hard Soraka counters Alistar because of this.

Sona – I don’t often play sona for the same reason as soraka, I find her a bit boring but she is still very strong. THe thing I love about sona so much is how adapable she is. It’s not often I level up her abilities in the same way twice. My skill order depends on how my lane is going, if we are doing well? q first, if we are losing the lane I’ll level W for the resistance (or if enemy karth). Some games you don’t even have to get your E until level 12. As far as playing her she does well from the bush. Now, her auto attack range is 550 and her Q range is 700, so anytime you get in range for a Q idealy you want to throw 1 auto attack as well, sona is so strong early if the enemy team doesn’t ward the bush to stop you it’s going to hurt them. Auto attacking from a bush reveals you to be harassed back so you want to learn to quickly step out of a bush, get your auto attack off, then step back in before they can return the favor.

Taric – Probably the best bush zoner as his mid lane zoning is stronger than Alistars, Know that his stunr ange is 625 so he does well against any carry but cait/ashe and kog depending on his W obviously. Taric works well with anyone who is strong early and is great at securing kills while offering good mitigation with his armor aura. Works best with ezreal and cait from what I have seen. ezreal can get in position and put a lot of damage down while their armor is shredded. Cait gets the job done because she can almost always follow up on the stun because of her range. Taric does not have good mana so make sure that if you are going to use the stun your carry can follow up on it. One dumb thing I see a lot of silly tarics do is shatter before using their ult, always use the ult first so you have the AP buff that makes shatter hit harder. There are two ways I generally start taric’s items. Boots and 1/2 wards or faerie charm with a pink and a few wards. If the enemy team wards your bush it hurts taric’s viability a lot, Taric is the strongest at the beginning of the game, take advantage of it so you don’t fall off so hard late game. Be careful when picking taric that you aren’t gimping your late game. Just like I explained with Alistar do the same with taric, when the enemy AD goes in to CS drop the stun on them as they are going in, they will be close enough to your AD to follow up. If you have a comp like Garen Ezreal Taric, don’t expect to win after 30 minutes. As I said above about soraka countering Alistar Taric does it in a different way. If alistar is coming in to wombo combo you, ready your stun on him and as he gets in range for his W it will go off and he will be stunned before he can get his Q off to stop you, so it will actually save you. It’s very satisfying. Also, because Taric’s stun is rather slow sivir tends to shield it most of the time, try to avoid doing that matchup.

This wasn’t exactly meant to show you everything about to support. I’m not talking about runes/masteries, when and where to ward, item builds. I just want people to better understand picks and how to help your carries do their job, they need you more than you know, support isn’t just “oh I get the easy job of getting to sit back” that’s how you throw games dumbass.

I’m sure much of this will be debated and I’m all ears for advice or questions.

Now this doesn’t confirm if it will come out at the same time or not.

I wanted to play Pantheon, so that works out for me. All the others I own or don’t care about. Can’t wait to see even more noob ass Viktors running around though.

Sometime this week is supposed to be new skins for current champions. Scheduled for some time next week is a new champion and some new game play balance changes.
